The Wood Pile
From the Tree Original to the Pile of Wood - and a Little Help from Friends & U-Haul
The last few days have been the culmination of some significant effort and first and foremost I want to thank my long-time “friends” - we are a group of couples got to know each other when our kids were in pre-school together. Our kids are all grown up but we have remained friends through the years, and the two fellas are older than I am by a bit….but just like I like to think I am - they are pretty fit for their age. Together we loaded the U-Haul truck and then unloaded the wood at the Getaway Place as you can see below - tis stored under the recently constructed “car port”.
A couple more views:
There is some pretty impressive Southern Red Oak here now - and I think later I’ll come back and trace the history of it - but let me add this - which is where it all started:
The wood above came from the bottom of the “Big Heritage Tree” we had to take down last March…..but if you check the archives I have several articles on this experience including discussion of the fella who came in with his mobile sawmill on my driveway several times.
Since then the milled wood has been stacked and covered and drying slowly but surely and I’m pretty happy with the lack of any warping in the pieces that now have been moved to the getaway place with a little help from my good friends and a U-Haul truck (20-feet).

Lastly, I’ll share an image or two showing future plans:
My kind neighbor let me borrow this book - I got a lot to learn.

ps - how bout them Bills! 4-0 is their record now…..
~~~~~~~~~ I would like to refer the reader to this article ~~~~~~~~~~
It shows some of the steps involved:
Now you see that one piece there - it was a helluva a job me and the woodcutter did to get it in place. Then next time he came he had proper tools and a plan with a winch and it was a piece of cake. The last time he came with his mobile sawmill it was after I made a special request - and the pile of wood up above consists of his hard work for which he was compensated and my hard work as well as planning along with a little help from my friends to whom I am most thankful.
It will either be just another “cutting board” but it might be the top of a stool.
That is one side and the other of a piece chosen cut - and yes it is raining.
Here is a crazy image from a crazy video - but it resonates in a way:
Let the truth be revealed - and goldfish - let them get their due!
Such a blessing to have all this wood stacked up at the house. It will take some time to dry, but you already know that you have some outstanding opportunities to create beautiful pieces. From the smaller parts, I can see a chessboard and figurines carved. All from one tree. Really awesome. Congratulations. It really helps to have a home. 😎
