Update 8 - 5525
Good News to Report - the Sprouts are Coming Back to Life!
So - it was over a week ago I had to take “drastic action” and repot essentially ALL of the sprouts (I’m sure glad I got those overwintered plants still - but damn - I’ve had to leave them alone for longer than I prefer - lots going on here at the Homestead). Because they had basically germinated so quickly but then stopped growing - it was bizarre….
So - let me share some images…
Now let me acknowledge and thank the fella my daughter ( She is: A Master’s Degree - Straight-A Horticulturist - out of NC State - my alma mater!) who shared with her some of his pepper plants and flowers - thank you so much for that contingency assistance. Those are the bigger ones in the back and they are mostly sweet peppers and perty flowers - but a few jalapenos are in there as well I think.
These are my “babies” in the one type of soil I used and they are doing well all things considered. The tomatoes in particular.
These are some of the other ones - for the 2nd set of them I used a different simple soil, but now I think I know what caused the sprouts to be stifled - cause the ones in this 2nd soil - while still growing OK have not done nearly as well - so I think I know the cause of why the sprouts were stifled - and I won’t get that mixture again next year. Lesson learned on my end - keep the initial soil simple.
~~~~~~~~~
Bottom line - in a few days these plants are going to go the Getaway Place to be put in the ground - that will be “Update #9”. Stay tuned.
~~~~~
And now - for the fun of it, a few other things going on just now at the Homestead:
You see those wood “slices” under the pot with rocks in it - those are future cutting boards and I already have the mineral oil (food grade) and beeswax on hand, but now I’m trying to dry them out and keep them from warping. This is gonna be my Mother’s Day gift to my wife - and she has already selected the slice she desires!
~~~
This is some lumber cut up last Tuesday and you see that log off the side of the driveway - it is next!
These are some “elephant ears” (water loving perennials) coming up in the vicinity of some of the other large logs from the heritage tree we had to cut down.
~~
I’ve been practicing with epoxy (don’t use it on cutting boards mind ya) - on this ole table we got from the Tubbs (our neighbors) so many years ago - and I’m sort of pleased how this ended up - I don’t think I’m going to paint the bottom part - cause I think I like the rustic appearance it has - and it matches in our porch area - and now the top surface is coated with fine resilient epoxy - and this is a good piece of furniture again….and that is something I think has merit.
Peace Readers!
ps - I send out a Happy B-Day to my gaming pal - who turns 60 today on 5525!
Good stuff Ken, we are in the final days of autumn here in the Cape and looking at two months of winter (June & July) although we still have 6 hrs of sun during this time. I shall be testing my soils in this time to prepare for spring planting. All my herbs and plants/flowers are in hibernation now but the birds are enjoying their daily feeds and our visiting black cat continues to delight us.
Blessings
