The Getaway Place
Hard Work and Sunsets
Felt like sharing some images from the “Getaway Place”…..oooh, just realized I need to take one more…..I’ll be back in a jiffy….
This picture was taken last night by my lovely wife:
Fries, VA - November 4, 2023

Below are images showing work I’ve been doing at our “next door” place that has been a great multi-year project for me and is still ongoing:
The kitchen fire place - after all the plaster was chipped away!
The “lounge” with another fireplace where the plaster had to be chipped away, and then I painted it the color you see - the floor there….true quality hardwood that was covered with mastic - but I got down on my hands and knees and scraped it away as best I could - a little mastic remains and damn that was good hard work for the body, mind, and soul.
My future office. How you like that carpet? Its the real deal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And now outside:
Some November flowers.
Gardens #2 and #3……I’m thinking I might convert Garden #4 into a chicken coop….one way or the other, there will chickens on the property in ‘24 - egg-laying ones. Probably no rooster though…..
Sometimes it is good to have a place quiet where one can get some good work done and think about what matters.
Peace!
OK, as I said I would in a comment on this post just below moments ago…here is the image:
The question I posed to a friend who knows is as follows:
So, the generator has a 50 amp connection. So, I would run the cable to the adapter and then to the heavy duty industrial surge protector. Is there any other equipment or parts needed? That is my question.
My guess is I need to check the wattage that might be transferred this way, but seems one ought be able to presume that the yellow piece with the 50-amp to 15-amp conversion already keeps the wattage in check? I’m sure there are better ways to do this, but I’m learning on the fly and I’m a quick learner - hard way or easy I learn either way.
~~~~~~
You know - regardless of my ramblings it is undeniable both the industrial surge protector as well as the generator proper were and are made in China. I mean really - do these sort of things even get made in the us of a anymore? Do you need an answer? If so, I reckon you are clueless and the answer means the future is obvious - easy way or hard way I reckon.
Incidentally - I call mainly lawyer BS on these warnings on the surge protector - I choose to disregard them mostly.
OK, wait. One at a time:
Do Not Use in Wet Locations - Agreed
Keep Children Away - For real? - I mean if you tell the kid not to touch and the kid does that anyhow, it will be lesson learned for that kid and other ones I suppose. If you got a kid stupid, then keep that kid away from the equipment and odds are if you think you got a kid stupid, then you probably do and would be advised not to get equipment you yourself don’t comprehend - just to put it flatly….cause I don’t think any kid is stupid inherently. All kids can learn and do we really need warnings like this? I don’t think so.
Use Indoors Only - I think the more important thing is not to let it get wet….for temporary purposes, I will use it outside if need be. Sometimes one doesn’t have a choice whether indoors or out - sort of like how it is in prison.
Fully Insert Plug - For heavens sake….I ain’t stupid - what lawsuit led to this one wonders…too many damn lawyers I reckon. If you don’t know how to use a tool you got no purpose to even have it and if you don’t realize plugs must be fully inserted, then why the f*** did you purchase a generator. Ergo - this warning is ridiculous.
Do Not Exceed Electrical Ratings - This is the one I need to study further for my own safety sake. (Edit: I’ve heard back from my pal and so I know now what I will do)
NOT FOR USE WITH - Um - I’ll use it how I choose to and really who the eff thinks they can tell the purchaser how to use a product.

This post needs a song:

So just now - like literally in the last 30 minutes give or take, I went next door got out the quality sander, created a homemade filter for it using to washcloths (one dry and one a bit wet) and gorilla tape (that stuff is better than duct tape), and then I sanded the top row of the cabinet framework (the cabinet doors themselves have already been revitalized as discussed in previous posts). Still, twas an inside job (literally! - ha, ha), and I'm an ESHA professional - but with the home-made filter, I didn't feel the need to wear a mask. I don't care for masks, but if needed during a dusty job, then hell yes I'll wear it for the sake of my health - the filter on the sander direct however seemed to work mostly....
Anyhow, I've opened the windows, placed two fans nearby, and hopefully all the residual dust will blow outside or settle to a surface (you know - deposition is the term for it).
In about an hour, after verifying it don't seem "dusty", I'll sand the bottom row basically the same way but I won't even need a step stool.
Then time to paint the framework - just like the cabinet doors already have been. Two or three coats of chalk paint is what we used followed by three coats at least of non-yellowing polyacrylate finish (for the sake of avoiding future scratches and whatnot on the painted surface).
Then replace the fixtures (handles and hinges) - with either the previous ones cleaned or new ones acquired....Then time to screw the hinges attached to the doors into the framework proper, and then this hellacious cabinet renovation job will be complete. Now I know why this is such a costly job if you have it done by a 3rd Party. Nonetheless, I have learned so much on this job, got to know my quality rotary sander so much better, had fun with my wife using the pressure washer (on the cabinet doors), and all-in-all this has totally been worth the labor - in fact I did for my own sanity.

You are such a landsman my good friend Ken and all you show to us is wonderful but we of the sea have another perspective. Our seaborne life is nothing to compare with land where competion prevales. At sea we cooperate - link Xi projects - but most are lost in the matrix and will not understand. Love is asking nothing in return. QED
