He had his first surgery yesterday and it supposedly went well. Broken ankle on one foot and broken big toe on the other.....it is going to take a while to recover....it is sad because he had just recovered from a serious leg injury that happened earlier in the year.
He was just going down our back steps (3 steps) and he had his hand on the hand-rail, but when he misplaced his foot, his ankle buckled and he lost hold of the rail as gravity took over and he fell down awkwardly and it was pretty evident that the injury required professional attention. I'm glad his head did not hit the floor and I guess it just goes to show how important it is to carefully go up and down the stairs.
Warm thoughts sent and prayers too Ken. I love your trip into brewing as I have done also many years ago - great pics thanks. But I have to convert your funny 'F' to Celsius 65 but that's OK - same as my brew.
I am over-worked today but able to post BOOM tomorrow before we rush off to Bath and my good 'salty-dog' yachtsman gets to his bank yet again and hope for a good outcome this time.
I'm looking at the hydrometer presently and P&S this thing was made in the USA but it has three scales upon it to measure the specific gravity of the liquid. It works based on the balance twixt the bit of weight on its bottom and the air in the rest of it combined with the glass it is made from and the scale indicator protected with the glass.
Here are the scales:
1. Potential alcohol percent by volume.
2. Sugar ounces per US gallon.
3. Specific gravity as 60 °F.
~
Now the reading I got was after the yeast had already commenced in turning the sugar into ethanol and so it probably is just a bit less than what it would have been had I measured it before adding the yeast. It was 1050+ in specific gravity - that means 5+ percent alcohol in this porter final product and around 16 ounces per US gallon in sugar content (must be by volume even though the "ounce", the oz is a tricky term from a unit perspective - especially when it comes to silver).

So seriously - I am a top notch chemical engineer and I sure hope you are on your Plan B way! I'll save a bottle for you.
Brilliant Ken - you are indeed a magic chem engineer and I stand in awe, being a lowly systems engineer! LOL. Yes we are OK on Plan 'B' and I fly out end November - can't wait!
You know the thing about Plan B's don't ya - sometimes even Plan B needs to be amended, but what matters is the intent behind the plan and so I wish of course safe travels and the next few weeks and the rest of 23 is going to be memorable I reckon.
My father in law's foot was misplaced as he and I were chatting when he was departing our place yesterday and then given that the man is over 80 years old and he is still so lucid - I mean an hour before we were discussing the Battle of Cowpens and he seriously impressed me with his knowledge, but it didn't surprise me cause I married his daughter and I ain't no fool.
Still, he fell and he was laying there incapacitated after I tried to make sure his head did not hit the hard tile when his foot was misplaced, but when you are 80+ years old, one misstep is all it takes if you arm ain't strong enough to hold you in place when you are holding onto the handrail.....and so we had to call the ambulance and they arrived and I watched them close, but let me tell you P&S - when they picked up my father in law to place him on the stretcher even though there were 3 of them, they didn't use the best technique and there was a chance he was going to fall on the ground again and do even more damage to his ankle and feet, and so I provided some unsolicited assistance to get him in the stretcher in the moment because I was there when the moment arrived and that was on purpose.
I love my father-in-law almost as much as my own dad, god rest his soul, so I sure hope they got a top notch surgeon to repair his ankle......I sure hope they did. My wife is with her Dad now while he is in surgery. Please send warm thoughts his way.
Warm thoughts and prayers are sent this very moment Ken and I know if our Creator deems it so, your loving father-in-law will mend and spread his special wisdom as it is written. I am beholden to a power greater than me and I am humbled by His grace. Thank you for loving share Ken - you offer more spiritual guidance than you know - but that is the way of the world - No?
It is - we all fall....it was hard though being with a man I know is so tough when he was there suffering so.
But we all suffer and sometimes pain can be cathartic I think the term is....2023 has been a year for me to learn about pain first hand, but when I see a man I love so much suffering it wrenches the heart and in a way it sort of makes me ready for the fight upcoming I reckon - in honor of my tough SOB father in law and my dad as well.
Still looking to have a cold brew with Jesus... https://twitter.com/bingley567/status/1713268938111394230/photo/2
Am praying for him I hope he’s ok
Hey Marty - you must know how much I love you - I told Pam as much. I'm praying for you and Frank.
Love you Marty.
