Fences Can Be Easy
Gardens sometimes need fences to keep the "critters" at bay
This update is mainly going to just be images, but here is a succinct update on my 2023 Garden Ambitions.
So last year I purchased about 50 feet of 6 foot fencing and I already have 50 feet of it and a few weeks ago I purchased 50 more feet.
Now just having the fencing material is not the only “ingredient” needed. Other ingredients include poles, a hammer, a step ladder for me, a plan, and the muscle to hammer poles and connect the fence (it helps to be a bit ambidextrous). Oh yeah a few plastic string-ties help as well assuming they are well made.
I’ve been at the getaway place for a few days and I’m here this time by my lonesome because I have work to get done.
Yesterday - it took me maybe 4 hours in total, I put up some garden fencing. Today, I am going to be putting down some flooring in the place adjacent, but that is a story for another day.
So, I’m still waiting on a few poles, but I put up at least 2/3rds of the fencing I need. Just have to finish the final garden area.
Now, the birds can still get inside the fencing and I want them to when I set some peppers outside (possibly earlier than optimal or desired), but the aphids have really hurt these pepper sprouts and I may just put some outside sooner rather than later because there is uncertainty as to whether they can live much longer with these aphids sucking the sap out of their little baby pepper leaves struggling.
I want the birds to get a nice meal out of these aphids and it could be this turns out to be symbiotic in a way, but I’d just assume not have this uncertainty around the pepper sprouts - next year I will know better. Lesson learned.
Other critters though including deer, groundhogs, dogs, kitty cats, squirrels maybe, foxes even, coyotes I reckon - I don’t want them eating on my garden plants trying to grow - ergo…..these fences are necessary. If a wolf shows up though, maybe I’d let the wolf into the fence.
OK, here are the images - and I’ll reserve comments on the pictures as a whole rather than individually:
OK - a quick summary. The first two show the new fencing. The next some baby peppers suffering that I took with me to our getaway place (others were left behind). Two images showing, lettuce new, garlic planted last fall, and some beets taking root.
The final image gets a special mention - I’m a big fan of Buffalo Wings and I know how to cook them easy - it is so easy. Maybe later I’ll share the recipe, but the lettuce you see on that plate came from the garden (some of the lettuce growing was not pictured) - so that makes this sort of the first official meal I've had in ‘23 with what I grew in the 2023 garden - let me tell you it was fresh and delicious and good and really truly tasty and satisfying! I ate it last night.
Lastly, I think I have basically finished the first two Chapters along with the Intro in my little side story I got going on…..so, I’ll post a link to the updated story as follows:
That is it for now - I’ll probably edit this message later if there are any typos, but otherwise, I’ll try to leave it alone for the most part and I hope all are doing well.
Please share any thoughts you have or ideas for improvement - I know I can’t do what I’m trying all alone……..

You know fences are "easy" sometimes and "hard" other times. Sometimes fences have to be made that last a lifetime and I'm not in support of such fences, but sometimes when "defense" is called upon well the "de" needs a "fense" does it not?
I'm not kidding - I could talk your head off, but I should know better - there is work to be done.
I'm basically just minding my own business, so I hope nobody ever tries to mess with that nor me nor my family....if they do, then they will realize the power of defense. It is so much easier than being offensive.
In fact, in the military conflict happening presently in the former country once referred to as *kraine, I believe there are some offensive minds who think they have combined arms to overcome the defenses already put in place. Put in place.
Put in place mind ya - and these offensive ones are living in a dreamland from the 20th century, but let me remind them we are presently abiding in the 21st century and while some ideas die hard, die they will when they are old, wrong, nefarious, and misbegotten from the get go.
So, I think if we can make it through 2023, these conflicts happening so far away for most, but not those there suffering direct, will come to a rapid close much more quickly than the old farts can even figure out because as each day goes by more of them will die off and good riddance is what I say to ideas misbegotten.
