Holy Moly - can you say “hot peppa” - (Primotalii). This is from one of the overwintered peppers and it has taken nicely. In fact, I happened to find a little baby pepper all red on it - and I picked it - and I put it in my mouth - and not more than a second later I had to spit it out and I felt the effects for about an hour or so. Not kidding - here it was (one hot baby peppa! - holy moly):

Those three are from the “Upper Garden” area - mostly beans, cucumber, and zucchini - but you can see the other peppers and tomatoes got planted there with the nice “cover fabric” which I intend on using more in the future - cause it sure keeps the “weeds” in check.

Those three are the “Lower Garden” area after some serious weeding work and installation of a bit more “fencing “ to keep those tomatoes from spreading out too much and interfering with the pepper plants. There are many fruit on both the tomatoes and the pepper ripening - and that will be the focus of the next update.

I’ll find a song for this but I remember in the “Control Room” in El Segundo I kid you not late at the night when we were trying to keep the “plant” running smoothly and Ted said to me - “Ken - the ants rule the world - they are unstoppable” - and Sons of Bitches I think Ted was correct about that, but we had product to be produced - a job to do - so we didn’t have time to sit and contemplate about the actions of ants - it what I should have said to “Ted” - not a good operator he was - often slack on the job - but hells bells I was just a Junior Supervisor at this time - if I went back there again I would have given Ted hell for all his random thinking and shit - cause hells-bells we had a plant to run I would say to Ted - and fuck the ants - let them do what they will.

Ted - was a hell of an operator when he wanted to be, but problem is he was lost in ant contemplation and that usually meant he was halfway worthless. I remember the other operators at the site there - I remember them all - how the hell could I not - I spent hours and hours of my time there - trying to make as much as possible - but it was a “no-go” - the ants got the best of that place - and then the accidents happened - the rest is history.

So this was the “job” I had to do - and I done it. I put the puzzle in the table - and that is that.

For a short time only - a “trip” back in time shows up here now - I could put this in epoxy if need be - and maybe I will!

This is the puzzle that is now submersed in hardened epoxy. One more coat to go.

Here are a few more images I share about the process. It really was quite simple - only because I’ve been doing this sort of work for awhile now and have learned many lessons the “hard way”.

This is how I “imagined” it before any epoxy was poured:

The wood is from a Southern Red Oak we had to take down in March of 2025. It was sad we had to cut the tree was cut down, but I had a fella come over with a Mobile Sawmill and he milled the thicker pieces into useful lumber.

The white “mold” is what makes the job so much easier compared to what I tried to do in the past.

So basically I just needed to cut the “1 x 4” pieces to size (48 inches each), then sand it, then wipe it clean. Careful selection of the wood pieces is necessary to minimize gaps.

So there you have it - basically from beginning to end and done in one day. The puzzle solved is now in epoxy - one final coat to go tomorrow and then when it “cures” fully I’ll remove it from the mold (mold release was used) and then attach the legs. Then that is that. It will be the 2nd Gaming Table I’ve made and will stay here in our place in Fries, VA.

OK - lets discuss imaginary numbers shall we? They are a construct you must know - an imaginary construct created to describe some “things” we hardly understand - cause they are imaginary.

But what if I said to you - I don’t think we need this imaginary explanation? I mean I literally think there is a physical explanation for it - it is hardly imaginary - but it does demand one is able to think outside the box of their mind!

OK - I will now simply and succintly explain why “black holes” (per the current physics nomenclature) do NOT exist. Here goes: Funnels all lead to somewhere else otherwise they would not be a funnel, but rather they would be a “cup”. Neither a funnel nor a cup are a black hole, and therefore, black holes do not exist..... Edit: “1810” - 1/8/10 - OK, OK, I admit, this (the last sentance above) is not definitive, but what follows in red is and the concept I was attempting to get across is the important difference between that which is of the “imagination” - such as black holes - versus that which can be directly sensed such as cups and funnels - so just to drag this out some more: I suppose black holes exist in imaginary mathamatics, but we don’t really know if a black hole behaves like a funnel or a cup or maybe a bit of both, and honestly what difference does this make to the here and now because it is all speculation, and there has simply been too much of that of late. Speculation is NOT proof and even worse, if unchallenged, it tends to “grow upon itself” leading to even more “vested error” that big egos have a hard time recognizing and acknowledging. Moreover, if something cannot be clearly defined because of too much uncertainty, can it even be understood at all? Might such speculation actually cause unforseen and dangerous consequences just like what happens when we “play” around with “zero” and “infinity” without really understanding our own inherent limitations? I think so, and I also think this sort of thing has been running ludicrously rampant of late and it makes it so hard to differentiate “truth” from fiction, and this accelerates, entrenches, and only gets worse the longer it goes on. It takes on a life of its own, yet it offers nothing in return, and in reality it is nothing but unchallenged fiction that ultimately has no merit. There is too much mud in the water and mountain tops are being blown away so that old life (coal) can be burned. This is foolish and irreverent and I hope that we come to our senses soon because the scales are in the balance - don’t you sense this? Troy later was defeated by West Virginia who was subsequently defeated by North Carolina Tarheels who subsequently lost to the victor for the 2026 Championship in Omaha - and that was the team out of Oklahoma as follows:

And did you or do you know the history of Oklahoma? I do. Trail of Tears all about that place out of Carolina no doubt - so fitting end I reckon but boy I was cheering for the team out of Troy - but history is history and Troy was defeated and so was the team from North Carolina in baseball of course.

The Hurricanes mind ya won it all this year - and I got a feeling in October there is gonna be some “hurricane action” in North Carolina - I mean come on - tis the name of the team no doubt!

Glory be we plan on picking the zucchini young this year compared to last time assuming things go well.

In general the plants are looking good and I watered them lightly today. I do have a sort of “sad” thing to report - the Ghost Mama Plant has not taken nearly as well as the other ones overwintered. I think she is reaching the end of her “prime time” but I’m sure she will have more to offer this season. I plan on just leaving her be this year and let her do what she wants basically. She is most likely literally “related” to all the other peppers in the garden. She is a “treasure” to me.

But the purpose of this article is not to talk about this Convention that will occur August 7-9 upcoming for invited players only. The purpose of this is to discuss the “rules” of the main game that will be played - and that is “Agricola” - tis about a humble farming family trying to get started - and here are the rules:

The images here are from the Getaway Place - Let me start out with how it looks presently:

So the “liner” on the ground lets call it was moved from the “previous garden” area where it had been effectively stifling growth of anything prior to the time I planned to plant some seeds - which is this weekend.

I moved the liner off (along with all the stones holding it in place). It is actually “underlayment” for a pond but it is effective in stifling growth of grass and weeds or whatever if that is desired. Here is another perspective of it:

So the liner you can imagine has been removed and placed over area where “grass is growing”. My plan is simple really. I got more dirt than I know what to do with this season - and this is some fine “garden soil” from the compost bin and is still actively “composting” I can attest to since I was standing in the top of the pile yesterday barefoot and glory be it was warm on my feet.

Now I have a lot of experience with composting and that was years ago, but suffice it to say I know quality compost when I shove it (uh….make that “shovel” - ha , ha) - and this is some fine garden soil - light and fluffy and nicely colored and obviously has gone through the required sequence of mixing browns and greens so to speak…..anyhow, I have no reason to doubt that it is “top-notch”.

So first let me share an image of “Waverly” - she is the bird that mostly likes to “chat with me” and I consider her one fine hen. She has had a bit of rain fall on her in this image cause she and her hen “mates” are usually much more fluffy with their fine and healthy feathers, but whatever the hens don’t mind a little rain action.

Now let me share my plan. I’m going to move the rest of the dirt I can’t use in this ‘26 season onto the underlayment described above and then basically just let it sit there till the ‘27 season. I expect it will look “halfway” decent and this is less lawn I have to cut and at the appropriate time the underlayment will be removed but the soil left in place. And that will be the Season ‘27 Expansion. I plan in advance and I got all this fine soil but I don’t want to leave a hill of it sitting there and I want to put it to good use - so this is the plan and I share it freely.

So to bring this to closure a few updates on the active “garden area” where I planted everything last Friday.

There are more “wood chips” where those came from and two more bags is all I think I need to finish coverage as desired and I have a supply. It is at the “other place” the six scoops of garden soil were delivered!

I think both them places are parts of Virginia that really is held together by the principles Jefferson and Madison espoused in this young up and coming country.

If places to the east desire to separate, then by all means - see you later but remember this - twas the Over Mountain Men who came to the aid of the rebels in Kings Mountain - as well as Cowpens. And if they didn’t, then this country would NOT exist. So remember that.

Now know this - I study my history - I been to both Kings Mountain (several times) and Cowpens as well - in fact I got an article here about a visit to Cowpens - first and only “double-envelopment”. So fair to conclude - don’t mess with Appalachia. I quote:

Its been “pretty dry” here in Virginia, but not so much in my garden and I don’t plan on watering too much.

This is what I started with yesterday morning.

This “Ghost Plant Mama” is like 4 (or it 5) years old and some tomatoes grew in her overwintered pot and I put them all in the ground where they really prefer to grow in general.

The hens were keeping me company during the planting effort.

One by one I put them in - it was really pretty easy and the little pots I used along with the “fertilizer” recommendation from my horticulture daughter was such an improvement versus last season when I “over-complicated” things I reckon.

These were the “leftovers” I plan getting in the ground soon enough!

Edit - here is an image of some concentrated product, but I could easily get the liquid out from the bottom of these containers and then along with some other liquid been saved put it in the pot with some concentrated acetic acid and bring the concentration up to a serious high level - and when I do this the product will NOT be for sale - rather it will only be offered up in barter. Now, I don’t have the stamina anymore to play in a tournament like that, but I’m trying to set something up here in Fries, VA - a casual gaming tournament - to sort of in jest determine the “best gamer” in the southeast.

So here is an edited version of the invitation I have sent to friends and family in this regard:

The 3rd Annual Fries Gaming Convention - August 7-9, 2026

I’m gonna make a poster for this and I will send it later - but the purpose of this gaming convention is to determine - who is the “best gamer” in the southeast us of a - but players from other parts of the country are welcome.

Now on the poster you will see an image of last year’s winner - and that is (redacted). And the game of the 2nd Convention that turned the tide so to speak was when the Pied Piper played a tune so fine, was Agricola. A shrink-wrapped rendition of this game in the box literal has been acquired and will be the opening game of the convention per tradition to play the game from previous year with the players present or substitutes as may be the case - to be decided by the victor from last year or the host as necessary.

So in other words, (redacted) if they attend will play the first game accordingly. Now if neither (redacted) attend then I will be here and I played in the game from the previous year and I will choose the players to start off the 3rd Annual Convention. If (redacted) attends, then he chooses any players other than myself, (redacted) - cause players from the previous years get precedence. I hope that is understood.

After this first game is played and there will be a “scoring system” - players who advance in previous games played recognized will face off against each other - most likely playing either Agricola or Azul which was the main game in the 1st Convention or any other game chosen by the players playing. If players bring another game to be played that will be given due consideration and by consensus will be part of the record keeping to determine who is the best player. New games are always desired but be careful if you play Azul when scores are recorded - cause that game is over in a heartbeat in contrast to Agricola. But if all players play a game agreed to be formally scored, then the outcome will be the score and that is that.

In general - the scoring is simple.

• 1st Place in any given game: 3 points

• 2nd Place - 2 points

• 3rd Place - 1 point

Moreover, the purpose of the convention is to play games together, so all players are encouraged to play - and basically the number of games ought be about equal for each player for the scoring to be “fair” if you understand what I am getting at - but no matter if you don’t feel like playing nobody will force anybody to do anything, but you might be diminishing your chance to get to the “final game”.

All games that get “counted” need to be “registered” with the host of the gaming convention - and that is me. But I hope all can agree this is a fair scoring system and the idea in a way is for the Convention to lead-up to a “final” game where it is realized - the best players play. The scoring for the final game will get “emphasis” and it could be you were in 3rd place (or even less) going into it but based on your performance in the final game - you win it all!

Details will be provided in the poster - and if you “win it all” you not only get your image on a Plaque celebrating your gaming prowess, but you get to pick out something from the place in Fries you desire to either take home with you or have a rendition made. This includes potentially a “copy” of the Gaming Table (excluding the silver coins embedded) which is attached.

With respect to accommodations it is first come first served - so if you commit then a room can be provided in either 104 or 108. Please don’t commit if you don’t mean it. After the 6 or 7 places easily accommodated are “booked” then further attendees will need to find a place nearby to stay and there are many and I can help with this. I would also like to say that if you have immediate family members you would like to invite, then please do and let me know if they plan on attending.

In Agricola, you’re a farmer in a wooden shack with your spouse and little else. At first, on a turn, your family gets to take only two actions, one for you and one for your spouse, as might be found among all the possibilities on a farm: plowing fields; collecting materials; building fences, and so on. There are numerous choices available, and while the game progresses you’ll have more and more, as each round a new action card is flipped over, offering one more possible action. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished but first you’ll need to expand your house to make room - and what are you going to feed all the little rug rats?

The game supports many levels of complexity, mainly through the distribution of cards which represent Minor Improvements and Occupations. In the beginner’s version (called the Family Variant in the U.S. release) these cards are not used at all. For advanced play, the U.S. release includes three levels of both types of cards; Basic (E-deck), Interactive (I-deck), and Complex (K-deck), and the rulebook encourages players to experiment with the various decks and mixtures thereof. But more than that, I absolutely love games with hardcore negotiation or with wiggle-room for a meta-game. I like the chance to mess with my opponents, to trash-talk, bribe, threaten, cajole, garner sympathy from, persuade, convince, trade, barter, beg, and otherwise manipulate. My favorite game, surprise, is Diplomacy, which means about half of you now, the half who lack the intellectual and emotional fortitude for a game like the Dip, are going to stop paying attention. That's fine, you also are not the target of this review. (I will acknowledge if you look at my ratings, I have shown some love for games like Princes of Florence, Carc, Settlers, and Arkadia, so I can see where some of you are coming from, even if you aren't willing to extend me the same.)

So with all of this in mind, why in the seven hells of tedious multi-player solitaires (Puerto Rico, cough cough, don't sneak out of the back of the room with your tail between your legs like you don't know who I am talking about) would I ever like a game like The 'Gric?

It's simple. The reason I like Ameritrash or Negotiation games is because they essentially conjure a sense of immersiveness and flow that I find missing in many of the cold, calculating spreadsheety Euros. The best games for me are games where I can forget, for a bit, that I am playing a game, and can be caught up, absorbed fully by the feeling that something is actually at stake. (Indeed, I would argue, one cannot truly win a game if one does not play as if there is something actually at stake, even though games are essentially acts of collaborative make-believe for which there is nothing inherently at stake, unless one considers the status gained among ones peers for winning to be worthy.)

Oh this is good - maybe I ought ask David Hood about this being little did I know the first game I played in was Round 3? Huh. Anyhow - here are the results:

I had no Round 4 in me after that long battle so to speak with Lance and Bob….but I thought I was starting out in the beginning. Little did I know I was dropped in there as a “wildcard” I reckon in Round 3 or maybe David just slipped me a little slack. But I did the Charlotte crowd proud and proved my mettle as Germany in that game with Lance and Bob. I remember it like yesterday. I recall that Lance and I could have eventually dismissed Bob, but that would of been a most unpleasant battle after all that had transpired up to that point, and neither Lance, Bob, nor I desired that - so we called it - a 3-way draw at that game in Chapel Hill - I remember like it was yesterday.

I ain’t gonna share more details about after the game when I went into the room Lance had rented out being this was in June and I got no idea what fate Bob had, but the reality is Bob was a hard fella to put the double-take upon, and I never did in that game best I can recollect. We never really encountered one another the way the game unfolded as all the other countries were dispatched - including Austria-Hungary, Russia, Italy, and France if memory serves.

Fact of the matter is in a way Bob was “odd man out” but we had all sort of worked together to dispatch the other countries so when push came to shove - we just decided to call it a 3-way draw.

If I had played in the 4th round odds are I would have been too tired to put forth a good effort, so I’m glad I didn’t. I think I came in 26th place in this tournament I only played one game.

David Hood is a hell of a diplomacy player - he and his group of fellas mainly - oh the story I could tell about the time I turned the tables but that is old history and really makes no matter nowadays.

Well - I thought this next update would be plants in the ground, and they want in - but the temperature is not “cooperating” along with the schedule of events - so it may be another week or so.

Meanwhile, I’ve not been idle. First though - here is an update on the plants - they are all doing fine and ready to start growing in the soil direct.

This shows some of the “overwintered” ones - several of them have some tomatoes that have “come along for the ride” - and in fact, well I already ate a tomato or two. The heater is there cause its been getting below 50 F in the evenings but I don’t feel like hauling these back inside again and I suspect they feel likewise.

Those three images above are the ones grown from seed I still have in possession. Holy Moly - the peppers are doing fine - but the tomatoes are tempermental - they need more space.

Lastly - I put some new wires around the coop - the birds got more space now - even though that just seems to make em want more! Like yesterday - when then all escaped! Lucky for me, I walked out there while they were meandering in the yard - free of any boundary besides their “hen-imagination” - so lucky for me I noticed them and they stayed close by.

I just got back from a long conversation with the hens and the situation - and last time I picked up eggs from the “boxes” was on 5/1 - and this is what I got today! The count was 16 - that is 4/5 per day! The birds just need me to be there to keep them inspired I reckon and keep em from getting “broody” needlessly - but can’t deny 16 eggs is about 12 too many - I need to do more frequent checks.

Let’s get down to business - shall we. The capsaicin concentrated in the product here is of high value - is it not? I got it in plenty of forms, and it is real and genuine. User discretion is advised, but the value of one of those jars of the solid concentrate is what? Well - what you pay for it is the question - cause realize you could both spice up so much soup with this “product” or you could use it to create a spray to be sent into the eyes of anybody offensive. The choice is yours but I got the product. And it is already most concentrated.

It is so concentrated just yesterday I discovered some of the jars had overflowed and the concentrate ran down the sides and upon the shelf - but this loss of product has been contained and the liquid material I got likely has easier capsaicin recovery potential. So this is what I do. I check the 10-day forecast cause the time is getting soon. And when I’m confident the temperature will remain above 50 °F (give or take), then a day or two before I prep the soil. I’m gonna need to do that soon - here is the 10-day forecast:

Well, seems I’m “fixing” to be a busy fella, but the planting sure enough ain’t gonna happen prior to the 2nd, but it might soon thereafter - cause you must know these forecast change - in fact, just the other day I’m not kidding the predicted low was something like 50 - but then I wake up in the morning right early and it is in the freaking 30’s. I had to go out there and move the babies inside - but they seem none worse and maybe gives em a taste of surviving in cooler temperatures - cause fact of the matter is after this many generations my plants are both:

1. Cold Tolerant in general; and

2. Resistant to aphids.

I got some seriously finely tuned pepper plants and tomatoes I suppose. Tuned to the garden they are soon going to be planted within!

With respect to self-sufficiency there are two critical items of import:

1. Food

2. Energy

So the images below show my efforts towards being prepared - cause seems difficult times are upon us. I got a feeling my neighbors are really going to appreciate me and I hope this is reciprocated. Then - together we will be better small-scale and locally.

So it is no secret I have a garden going - I’ve been working on it for about 5 years now and my focus and specialty is peppers basically. There are some I got growing that are growing nowhere else on planet earth - I kid you not. They are “hybrids” - and I got some that are most fiercesome spicy hot - oh so hot, hot, hot! Like a pepper spray to the soup - just one spray or two is all it takes kind of hot - to add some spicy flavor. I got a feeling these peppers have quite the barter value!

I have products saved in this regard - perhaps I ought take a picture of them as they are presently on the shelves. Oh - I just took the picture - I’ll show it at the end.

Now when it comes to food security I have become a big believer in chickens. I kid you not. They are easy to have in the yard - you got to have a proper setup mind ya, but then they supply “easy protein” - so really everybody ought have chickens - or at a minimum neighbors who do.

So the above chickens are Buff Orpintons and their names are as follows:

1. Pumpkin

2. Buttercup

3. Waverly

4. Haskell

5. Captain KFC

Presently and since about the start of the year they each lay about 5 eggs a week. Now that is some good protein production I say.

In addition to chickens - everybody ought have a garden if possible - hell you can have a garden growing in pots if you don’t have a yard. Anyhow - here is a portion of the ‘26 crop I’m tending (not showing the ones overwintered) and they had some outside time recently and really seem to be coming into their own.

So there you have it - two easy first steps towards food independence. Chickens and a garden.

Now when it comes to energy small-scale I’ve come to appreciate solar panels and I have setup some on my own at our “getaway” place here in the hills of Virginia.

There are sixteen 100-W panels there - I run four in series and four in parallel - and then the “box” you see there is where they are wired together and then the wiring goes inside.

I’ve got more batteries on the way and this is an older image cause I have put in two “busbars” to simplify the wiring - but be advised there are lots of lessons to learn if you want to try to do this yourself. I’m here to help if you have any questions and one of these days I’m going to publish my final “solar panel” setup article - cause I have learned a lot - one thing I have to install when the new batteries arrive is a “battery balance” - and I will do that - and then you would be surprised how much easy energy one gets on any day when there is a little sunshine - even if cloudy.

After a few “hiccups” I have added the additional batteries and a battery balance to my solar panel setup. This is the “final” configuration for the time being. 16 panels and 8 batteries - with an MPPT, circuit breakers, an inverter, and a battery balancer.
